Thank you to Ink Road for sending me a finished copy of this gorgeous book to read!
Harley in the Sky is Akemi Dawn Bowman’s third contemporary novel, I found this novel to be really different from Starfish & Summer Bird Blue, I loved both of those books, Akemi Dawn Bowman does have some amazing writing and I can’t not get her books!
Akemi’s books so far have hit my right in the feels, I loved how this one was based around the circus, I really liked our main character, Harley, at the beginning there were times I thought she was acting younger than 18 but as the book went on, I found her character evolved a bit and I enjoyed seeing how her story went.
More towards the end of the book we discover that Harley suffers with depression, and there’s a bit that Akemi wrote that really hit home and I always struggle to put the feeling into words surrounding my own anxiety and depression but I’m going to include the quote here:
“It’s kind of like being in this state of worry that something is going to go wrong. Something is going the trigger the figurative trapdoor beneath my feet, and I’m going to plummet. I don’t know what it is or when it will happen, but I know it will happen. I know the darkness is nearby, waiting for a reason to ruin everything.”
I found myself relating to Harley quite a lot in terms of all these plans and amazing ideas she has to get on with her life when she’s happy but the next day it all disappears and none of those things feel even remotely possible.
Aside from that aspect, I really enjoyed the story, reading about Harley’s struggles as she runs away to an opposing circus thinking that she finally has someone who will help her dreams come true, but it’s not as what Harley thought it would be. I most definitely recommend it and both of Akemi Dawn Bowman’s other books and I can’t wait to see what her next book will bring!
Are you planning on getting this one? It’s officially out on March 10th!
