Thank you Gollancz for sending me a hardback copy of this book to review and for being on the blog tour! The God Game by Danny Tobey is a Sci-Fi Thriller. The book is done from multiple points of view, mostly of Charlie and his friends but there being a few others you glimpse into as well.
Charlie and his friends enter the G.O.D Game which is run by underground hackers and then controlled by an AI in which believes that it is God. They get to glimpse into this mysterious second world through their phones and then through some high tech glasses and it’s a lot like virtual reality we have now except more advance to see things within our world.
It’s such a dangerous game to play where you can be rewarded with all you’ve wanted or you’re terrorised and beaten because you didn’t obey what G.O.D wanted. Charlie and his friends didn’t realise the danger they’ve put themselves in with Peter and Alex being dragged under into the game more than Charlie realised he’s doing his best to save him and the rest of the Vindicators out of the game and they all have to jump through hoops to make sure the AI doesn’t think they’re quitting.
I was hooked into this book from the first chapter, the world was so interesting and the concept of the AI in this was incredible. It shows the dangers of social media, even just things that have webcams etc in general and of joining things that seem innocent at first but end up so incredibly dangerous that not everyone might make it out alive, I was drawn in by the mysteriousness of it, you never know who is watching.
I found this book to be fast paced because there was always something that was going on, I really liked how much the author was able to include into this book, about what it can be like at school, bullies, difficult home lives and even abuse within a relationship.
I really recommend this book, and with the way that it ended, it seems open ended for there to possibly be a second book for the parents of the children to then go through, so I’m hoping that there will be but I can’t see anything on it right now!
God is always watching, and He says when the game is done.
Do you think that this might be a book for you?
