Disclaimer: I bought this book myself, all opinions are my own.

I read A Darker Shade of Magic back in 2018 and I just did not get the hype, I gave it three stars and people on instagram were SHOOK that I gave it such a low rating.. I just couldn’t understand why it was so hyped up, so far A Darker Shade of Magic is my lowest rated book out of all the V E Schwab books I’ve read so far!

But despite giving A Darker Shade of Magic a low rating I did like the premise of it and I did want to continue it as I have heard that the second book is better, I waited until the collectors edition came out and I then eventually read it as I wanted to get some books read for YALC!

For me, I found that this was a bit of a slow burner, it took me an entire week to read this which is unusual for me considering I could normally finish a 500 page book in two days. Because this is an adult fantasy this was why (I think) it took me a while to get it read. Overall I did end up enjoying the book, the characters to me were more interesting and had more depth and I could easily follow the book along a bit more.

If you weren’t so keen on the first book, I do recommend giving the second one a try because for once a book does not have second book syndrome and in my opinion, better than the first one. I am looking forwards to reading the third and final book because this ending was surprising and actually made me want to pick up the third one! Not sure if I’ll wait until it’s released as the UK collectors or to just grab a normal paperback at some point, we shall see!

What are your opinions on this series? I’d love to know!
