Trigger Warning: Rape & abuse.

Alice is a dark and twisted fairytale retelling of Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderaland and this book does contain rape and abuse.

“You’re only a mouse if you let them make you one.”

I loved this one, I’ve been loving Christina Henry’s books and her writing is amazing, the stories are incredible as well! Alice and Wonderland is one of my ultimate favourite stories and I love to read a good retelling of it and even better when they’re dark ones! Christina Henry is one of my favourite authors for dark reads, her books are so fast paced and gripping that they’re so difficult to put down!

Alice is contained within a four wall room hospital that she might not ever leave, she can’t remember why she’s been put here but all she can remember is a tea party with a man with long ears and her only company is Hatcher for years.

One night the hospital catches fire and Hatcher arrives at her door, unlocking it to help her escape. However during their escape they realise that they’re not the only ones who made it out alive. The Jabberwocky, whose dark, powerful and Hatcher struggles to escape its clutches when it’s nearby. Alice and Hatcher have to journey to find the truth and finding ways to overcome obstacles that come their way.

Such an amazing horror fairytale and I was so glad that I could instantly move onto the sequel Red Queen because I just needed to find out more.. The characters were all so well written and I couldn’t help but fall in love with both Alice and Hatcher. I ended up bingeing this book within a day because I just could not put it down, nor did I want to so I couldn’t not give this book five stars! Again, it does contain extremely graphic scenes of violence, rape and sexual assault.

Don’t continue reading if you haven’t yet read Alice as it may contain spoilers.

Red Queen picks up where Alice left off with Alice and Hatcher heading towards Old City and where they thought it was going to be lush green hills and a hopeful place to go, they are sadly mistaken. Where they thought they could escape the horrors they had been through only to find the Old City is nothing but ash.

This book sends us on a journey to find Hatchers daughter, where they have to go through forest and deal with the mad White Queen and also the cruel Black King.

Alice also starts to discover her powers and is attempting to learn how to harness them and to do so it leads her to the mysterious Red Queen whose vengeful of her death.

I did enjoy this one but I didn’t enjoy it as much as the first one hence why it’s four stars instead of five. It’s still a dark retelling but this one isn’t as dark as the first book. It was great to see the development of the two characters though and I am looking forwards to reading Looking Glass when it’s out next year which is a novella about this duology so I’m excited to see what happens in that!

Have you read either of these books? Let me know what you thought of them! 🙂
