Graphic Novels | Reviews

I’ve been getting more into graphic novels lately and so far in June I’ve read 3 so far and instead of reviewing them separately, I thought that I’d combine them into one blog post as they’ll be relatively short :3

Without further ado, book number one that I read was…

Saga, Vol 1 by Brian K Vaughan (author) and Fiona Staples (artist)

★★★★☆

This one is about two soldiers whose are on opposite sides of a war that seems to not end. This one contains, violence and sex within it, admittedly some of it was weird but I love the characters and I really want to carry on with the series and grab the other novels at some point as there seems to be a lot of action within it so it definitely doesn’t get boring! I liked the art style as well, it’s always a bonus to read something where the art is amazing! I know that there are currently nine volumes in this series, so I’m currently looking to find these used cheap on amazon as this is one of the three I’ve read so far this month that I mostly want to continue on.

Monstress by Marjorie M Lui and Sana Takeda

★★★★☆

Monstress is a steampunk graphic novel and I think it’s an absolutely gorgeous book, I don’t think that I have a single bad thing to say about this graphic novel really! It’s set in an alternate matriarchal 1900’s Asia and it follows a girl whose struggling to cope with the trauma that the war left on her. She’s also discovering more about herself as she’s sharing a psychic link with a monster that has a ginormous amount of power and she’s constantly being pursued by humans and otherworldly powers. The story and character arcs in this is just amazing, I highly recommend this one!

The Wicked and The Divine Vol 1 by Kieron Gillen

★★★★☆

This one wasn’t what I thought it was going to be, it’s not as fast paced but it sounded intriguing. Every ninety years the twelve Gods are reincarnated as humans for two years, they are loved and adored or hated. But once two years are up they are dead. The twelve Gods are all pop stars. It was an interesting concept, though it’s not my favourite out of the graphic novels I have read so far, I am intrigued enough by the ending to want to get the next novel but it’s not overly high on my want list to do so just yet!

I’ve bought a couple more graphic novels, I’ve bought the next three graphic novels (2, 3 & 4) of Saga series so that I can continue with that one and then I got three different ones I haven’t yet tried, Paper Girls Vol 1, Buffy the Vampire Slayer Vol 1 (I love Buffy!) and Sex Criminals Vol 1.

A couple that I’ve already read beyond these are Heartstopper and Nimona, do you have any recommendations beyond these ones that you think I might be interested in? I have no genre limits within Graphic Novels so go ahead and recommend me anything! 🙂
