Camellia Beauregard is a Belle. In the opulent world of Orléans, Belles are revered, for they control Beauty, and Beauty is a commodity coveted above all else. In Orléans, the people are born gray, they are born damned, and only with the help of a Belle and her talents can they transform and be made beautiful.

But it’s not enough for Camellia to be just a Belle. She wants to be the favorite—the Belle chosen by the Queen of Orléans to live in the royal palace, to tend to the royal family and their court, to be recognized as the most talented Belle in the land. But once Camellia and her Belle sisters arrive at court, it becomes clear that being the favorite is not everything she always dreamed it would be. Behind the gilded palace walls live dark secrets, and Camellia soon learns that the very essence of her existence is a lie—that her powers are far greater, and could be more dangerous, than she ever imagined. And when the queen asks Camellia to risk her own life and help the ailing princess by using Belle powers in unintended ways, Camellia now faces an impossible decision.

With the future of Orléans and its people at stake, Camellia must decide—save herself and her sisters and the way of the Belles—or resuscitate the princess, risk her own life, and change the ways of her world forever.

I got this book when it came out last year but it had been sat on my shelf ever since and one day I was tempted into picking up and I received an email about being on a blog tour for The Everlasting Rose so what perfect timing to pick it up!

I really enjoyed reading this, it was such a different change of pace to my usual fantasy reads, it’s got less action in and despite that, I found it extremely interesting and I got stuck into it easily! All of the characters were different and they all had such good development even the villain of the book I thought was so well done! The world building was fantastic and it was easily imaginable. This book is mainly about beauty and how as a society they are obsessed with it, they’ve all got to have treatment from the Belles to look their best otherwise they’re grey and having beauty treatment costs a lot. I also liked how the romance in this book wasn’t overwhelming whatsoever, think there was only a few pages of it!

Just a warning to you all there is some torture in the book, human and animal wise, (I believe theres only one moment of this in this book revolving animals?) having the Belles do beauty work is painful and people usually drink a tea to handle the pain and then there’s only so much beauty work that the human body can handle in a day and overdoing it will kill a person.

The ending of this book was super fast paced and the most action in the book, it ended with a surprise I wasn’t expecting and definitely makes you want to dive into the second book as soon as possible!

In this sequel to the instant New York Times bestseller, Camille, her sister Edel, and her guard and new love Remy must race against time to find Princess Charlotte. Sophia’s Imperial forces will stop at nothing to keep the rebels from returning Charlotte to the castle and her rightful place as queen. With the help of an underground resistance movement called The Iron Ladies-a society that rejects beauty treatments entirely-and the backing of alternative newspaper The Spider’s Web, Camille uses her powers, her connections and her cunning to outwit her greatest nemesis, Sophia, and restore peace to Orleans.

Thank you Gollancz for sending me a free copy of this book to review!

Oh gosh, this one I’m finding so difficult to review, as I don’t want to spoil anything for you guys!

I was so happy that I was able to jump straight into the second book after finishing the first because that ending! I found this book to be more eventful than the first book, it had a lot more action in it! The character development got even better since the first book but there was definitely less world building in this one but there were Teacup Dragons which were adorable and amazing! We get to see some new characters, the Iron Ladies who are the resistance, who I desperately want to know more about so that third book needs to happen!

Again, like in the first book there wasn’t an awful lot of romance, I did think there was more of it in this one but there wasn’t a lot to effect the storyline too much which I thought was a good thing for these books.

It was more fast paced and I did feel as thought I flew through this one a lot more than the first book though I feel as though there were still some loose ends as I still have some questions but overall I did really enjoy reading this duology despite that! However I did see on Goodreads that this is a duology for now so hopefully Dhonielle Clayton writes a third book at some point in the future!

I recommend this series, especially if you want to read something quieter for in between higher fantasy reads, so go preorder it! I’ve never read any of Dhonielle Clayton’s books before so I will be looking out for any of her previous and future books.
