Thank you to Pan Macmillan and MyKindaBook for sending me this beautiful arc copy of the book!
The last person who called me by my true name was my mother, with her dying breath.’
Ash Princess was one of my highly anticipated reads of 2018, I was extremely happy when I saw that I had gotten an arc copy in the post but when reading I expected so much from it and I was left disappointed.
I thought the beginning half of this book was very slow but it did get better in the second half but it didn’t really grip me until the last few chapters when there was roughly 10-20% of the book left..
This book is a YA Fantasy and it’s based around royalty, which is my favourite kind of genre, I am trash for these types of books but I have to say this is my least favourite out of all the ones I have read. There wasn’t really any action in the book, the most exciting bits happened at the very end in the last few chapters.
I had a major urge to DNF this book during the first half but I just couldn’t bring myself to do it, I knew I’d regret it plus it’s an arc that I got to review and it wouldn’t have been fair for me to review it without reading the entire thing. I had someone message me to tell me to stick to it and that it does get better and they were right but honestly, I am more excited for the second book, I feel that that one will interest me a lot more and it’ll have more of a plot!
This book is about a princess called Thora who the Kaiser of another kingdom came to her land and her kingdom under siege and they murdered her mother and took away her people so that Thora would be the Princess of nothing and what the Kaiser liked to call her the Princess of ‘Ashes’. She is then a prisoner in her own home after the Kaiser choses to keep her alive, we see the Princess and her life five years after the siege happens. Thora is paraded around like a trophy and beaten when things go wrong even if they’re not her fault, when suddenly an old childhood friend appears to her and this sparks rebellion in her and she decides to escape from her capture but she doesn’t leave when she first has the chance because the Prinz has his eyes on her and she wants to lure the Prinz into her clutches and also murder the Theyn. Only when she has completed her mission she decides to escape so that she can one day finally reclaim her throne from the Kaiser who ruined her life.
I did really enjoy the ending of this book and I do have a feeling that the second book will top this book a lot more, so I do look forwards to Lady Smoke. But I feel that this book was a lot of background information as it does give a lot of insight to various characters that will come back in the second book.
