First Year by Rachel E Carter ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I was kindly given an ebook copy of this book in exchange for an honest review, I had my eye on The Black Mage series for quite some time and seeing a chance to be a part of Rachel’s review team was an great opportunity for me!
I give this book a five star rating, it was an enjoyable read and I’m excited to carry on this series and find out more.
This book introduces us to twins, Alex and Ryiah, Ryiah being the main character of this story, who are from Demsh’aa and were born of lowborn status who go both go off to attend the academy, Alex to go into Restoration and Ryiah to Combat, on their way to the academy they run into a little bit of trouble where we find out how Ryiah accesses her powers. The masters at the academy aren’t fond of first years and don’t really care for them until they find out at the end of the year who the 15 students go onto the apprentice.
There are a nice various amount of characters that are introduced into the story, Ella who is Ryiah’s highborn friend and Darren who is a second born prince – he seems quite infuriating to Ryiah throughout most if not all of the book but I think it’s just a front and he doesn’t want to admit to liking her at all, I can see them becoming a love interest in the second book 😍 hopefully 😆
This book was incredibly enjoyable, I love the way the Ryiah has grown in the book from the way she was with her magic to now, Ryiah I think had the most determination out of all the students to want to make it to the five, the scenes between Ryiah and Darren were OMG… that kiss 😱. The action in the book is practically non stop and I couldn’t put it down! Rachel has done an amazing job writing this story and had me hooked from the first chapter. I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoyed Harry Potter but want a different take on magic.
