The candidacy finally arrives and a winner is robed, but something dark is lurking in he kingdom’s midst. Rival nations are closing in, and it’s time to make an alliance. Unfortunately for Ryiah, that’s only the beginning. The worst enemy resides at the palace.
I give this book 5/5 stars! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Candidate is the third instalment in Rachel E Carter’s The Black Mage series, and so far I have not been disappointed with it! This book is filled with action and cute moments between Ryiah and Darren, but like all good books, there is always something bad happening.
So in this book, we find out more about the King and his heir, Blayne, and we discover some information about the heir that is SHOCKING – like OMG how could he do such a thing?! – but perhaps not surprising, I mean I wasn’t. We also learn more about the rebels and WHO they are. – we know the characters who are the rebels which makes it more 😱😱😱😱.
But however, at the end of chapter 15, we are greeted with this paragraph – ‘Our enemies – those heartless, faceless others who’d stolen so much – had to pay. It was a fire consuming the dark, fanning us with it’s flames and searing a brand right across our hearts. Perhaps that was why I didn’t notice when one walked right through the palace doors.’ I instantly knew who the ‘enemy’ was going to be so I wasn’t shocked when the revelation came. There are some major plot twists and 😱 moments once chapter 16 hit, and on my kindle, this was less than 80 pages from the end of this book. At the end of the book, we do get Ryiah and Darren’s wedding and I thought that it would end with the wedding but I DID NOT EXPECT IT TO BE LIKE THAT AT ALL! I thought it would be longer, happier and sappier and I got none of it. 😩
I am extremely eager and hesitant to read The Last Stand because I want a happy ending and I know I’ll have to go through ALL the motions in the next book, but I know that I will love it nonetheless. I HIGHLY recommend this series, 100% – go and check out the series, I’ve left the link to Candidate’s Goodreads and online retailers below.
